Implement a Passive House Standard in Title 24

The dark colours on this thermogram of a Passive house, at right, shows how little heat is escaping compared to a traditional building to the left.

Passive house is a voluntary standard for energy efficiency in a building, which reduces the building’s ecological footprint. Conforming to these standards results in ultra-low energy buildings that require little energy for space heating or cooling. (Source: Wikipedia)

We want to accelerate the establishment of a low-energy-demand, high-performance green building standard in California.

Building types will include all of the following: single family residential buildings, multi-family residential buildings, and commercial buildings.

Broadly, the two legislative steps being proposed are:

  1. define an alternate compliance pathway to high-performance buildings
  2. offer incentives for developers and builders to follow the pathway.
