Stop Oil Drilling Off California Coast!

We launched a petition to the federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), urging the agency to reject the Administration’s proposal to open currently protected coastlines to offshore drilling for oil and gas. The response to the petition has been gratifying: more than 900 signatures so far, many appending important personal comments. Thank you all who have signed and written! We will submit the petition, and comments, before the deadline, but…

…we’re now learning that it’s possible the petition will be counted by BOEM as just one substantive comment, regardless of the number of signers (although that number may well be material to a future court challenge, should the policy move ahead).

So, with thanks to our partners at the Surfrider Foundation and 350 Humboldt, and to Congressman Jared Huffman, I’m attaching talking points for individual letters and including in this email detailed instructions for submitting individual comments.

Please take a few minutes to review the document (you’ll learn a LOT), pick a point or two, and compose a brief message explaining why this issue is important to you, to the climate, and to all of us. The deadline to submit comments is this Friday, January 23, at 8:59 pm Pacific, 11:59 pm Eastern.

Follow these steps to submit your comment:

  • Go to www.regulations.gov/document/BOEM-2025-0483-0001
  • Click the blue “Comment” button.
  • Enter your comment in the text box or upload a document with your message.
  • Provide your email address.
  • Select an identity (individual, organization, or anonymous).
  • Complete the reCAPTCHA verification.
  • Click “Submit Comment” to finish.

Thank you! for your extra effort and persistence. That’s what it takes!
