Vote YES on Prop 50 — for the climate!
Climate Action California is all in on Proposition 50, the constitutional amendment on the November 4 special election ballot—redistricting our state’s Congressional districts to ensure a national level playing field in the 2026 general election.
In a direct response to the Trump-mandated redistricting of Texas—intended to add five MAGA seats to Republicans’ historically small majority in the House of Representatives—Governor Newsom and the California legislature are submitting to the voters a temporary redistricting plan that will counter Texas’ move with five new Democratic seats. With the 2030 census, California’s non-partisan redistricting commission will once again redraw the lines.
Climate Action California volunteers discussed this at length before deciding to endorse. While we would much prefer that districts based on the 2020 census remain in effect for a full decade as is usual, we’re glad that California is big enough — and Blue enough — to neutralize Texas’ effort to give Republicans an unfair advantage in the all-important 2026 House contests. We’re also gratified that California is pursuing its own redistricting in the most democratic way possible: with the approval of voters in a special election.
If you’re on the fence about this, here’s a thought experiment: Imagine that Prop 50 loses, and Texas steals the Congress for Trump and Mike Johnson.
We are asking all of our supporters to join us and vote YES on November 4. The amendment requires a simple majority of votes to pass. This will be “a turnout election,” meaning we can pass Prop 50 if enough like-minded people turn out to vote.
Besides voting, what else can you do to help pass Prop 50? There are plenty of opportunities to knock on doors write letters and postcards, and phonebank to Democratic-leaning voters.

- Write letters to Dem-leaning California voters with Vote Forward, through Oct. 29
- Host local door-knocking, with a listing on the state Democratic Party website
- Send money to the Yes on Prop 50 campaign, and sign up for text updates
- Governor Newsom has through Monday to sign or veto bills passed this year. We’re keeping track of CAC’s priority measures on our website.
